STARRING:
Determined to make a life for herself and her daughter, Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney), a young widow, moves into a cottage overlooking the windswept English coast. She soon learns that it's haunted by the ghost of its former owner, a salty sea captain (Rex Harrison). But the Captain's efforts to scare off his new tenant soon develop into a most unlikely love affair. When Lucy runs out of money, the Captain "ghost writes" a book for her, based on her life story. Their publishing success, however, brings her the amorous attentions of a man who's still very much alive (George Sanders). Soon Lucy must choose between the pleasures of the spirit and those of the flesh and the Captain must choose a course that may haunt him forever.
Rex Harrison (Capt. Daniel Gregg) was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1989.
Gene Tierney's first approach to the character of Lucy Muir was playful, almost screwball. After a conference between Darryl F. Zanuck and director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, the first two days shooting were redone so that Tierney could give the character more depth. The change resulted in huge critical acclaim for the actress.
R.A. Dick was the pseudonym of Josephine Leslie, who wrote the 1945 novel "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir".
