STARRING:
Frank Sinatra busts loose and outsmarts the Nazis! As the Allies begin to push the Nazis back towards Germany, US combat pilot Colonel Joseph Ryan (Sinatra) is shot down and placed in a prison camp. Initially, he's more concerned with surviving than escaping, earning him the insulting nickname "Colonel von Ryan." But in time, Ryan takes over from the British commanding officer (Trevor Howard) and masterminds a daredevil race for freedom that involves commandeering a train and getting it across Italy to Switzerland with the Nazis in hot pursuit. Then it's all blazing action, hair-raising chases and spectacular Italian scenery in this Oscar® Nominated adventure that runs full speed until the nail-biting finale!
Whilst filming "Von Ryan's Express" at the 20th Century Fox lot , Frank Sinatra (aged 50) fell in love with Mia Farrow (aged 20), (whom he would later marry) who was on the soundstage starring in prime-time soap opera "Peyton Place".
The first train station, Firenze SMN or Santa Maria Novella, is the end of a spur into Florence. The train wouldn't have gone through it.
