MGM had originally planned to "loan out" Jean Harlow to Twentieth Century Fox for the role of Belle Fawcett (ultimately played by Alice Faye), in exchange for acquiring Shirley Temple to play the role of Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" (1939). The deal fell through when Harlow died in June 1937.
